Sports injuries in Africa seem to be a family tradition. I suffered from an eye injury on local basket-ball court some thirty years ago in Zaria, Nigeria. I think Mom was more terrified on that since I was drugged to lie down in bed for a couple of days. Then she walked me to the eye clinic after the week-end. Even then, not too bad.
Coming back to the discussion we had on Sunday via skype; the Maslow hierarcy of needs is very true as you realized when changing views with your fellow researchers from different societies e.g. Zimbabwe. The essentials of living still have to be prioritized in many countries. It was interesting to hear that South Africa represents the academic centre of Africa. The Kenyan study of the leadership of African women sounds very interesting. Might be good to have a look on the web site of two NG-organizations,World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and Zonta International. Both organizations have important projects aiming to improve the status of women. What an opportunity you have Erkka to meet and communicate with academics from different societies and research areas! With love, Mum
Hope you're not continuing another family tradition to tore your ACL far away from home. Even though it's warm down there don't forget active wam-up routines and dynamic mobility drills before football, not sure what is the level of South-African orthopaedics...
